Mr. Ducaru was appointed Ambassador to the U.S. in spring 2001, after having served, most recently, as Permanent Representative of Romania to the United Nations and, prior to that, as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Romanian Embassy in Washington. Ambassador Ducaru’s presence made a significant contribution to strengthening traditional ties and forging new relationships in this part of the United States. The visit’s main focus was on increasing Romania’s visibility and securing support for key issues of foreign policy, such as the invitation to join NATO at the upcoming NATO summit in Prague and EU accession. The Ambassador’s meetings centered on three important aspects relating to Romania and the presence of Romanian Americans in Northern California – community, political presence and business relations. On March 9, 2002, after Ambassador Ducaru, Mrs. Carmen Ducaru and Ms. Dana Beldiman Stanculescu had been warmly welcomed by the newly formed “Romanian Community Center of Sacramento”, the Ambassador addressed an audience of about 200 Sacramento Romanian Americans. The Ambassador also spoke to a gathering of the Romanian community in the San Francisco Bay Area, Casa Romana, at a dinner hosted by Sorin and Mariana Cismas. On March 12, 2002, Ambassador Ducaru gave a speech at the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco. On the political front, Ambassador Ducaru spoke on the topic “Romania’s Momentum – Internal Reform and Contributions to International Security” to an audience at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, after being introduced to the audience by former Secretary of State George Shultz. The following day, leaders of both Casa Romana and the Romanian Community Center of Sacramento accompanied the Ambassador to meetings with representatives of Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer. Finally, on the business side, Ambassador Ducaru met with representatives of Hewlett Packard , Solectron and Agland, companies which have a business presence in Romania. He also addressed the March meeting of the Romanian Business Network of Silicon Valley.
